Team GB Olympians dominate New Years Honours list

A fine year for British sport has been topped off with a number of Olympians being added to the new years honours list. Andy Murray, off the back of winning the BBC Sports Personality of the year award will be knighted along with Mo Farah, Lee Pearson, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katherine Grainger also adding to the list for their contributions to sport. 

Andy Murray finishes 2016 as world number 1 in the rankings, a Wimbledon title, an Olympic Gold medal in Rio and now will be Sir Andy Murray ( although he doesn't wished to be greeted this way!). Mo Farah lived up to his title as one of the greatest long distance runners by winning double Gold again in Rio, after his heroics in London 4 years earlier. Jessica Ennis-Hill officially retired after winning Silver in Rio and she will be knighted Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. Jessica won Gold in the Heptathlon in London 2012, and missed out on Gold in Rio after a fine performance from Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam who recorded 5 personal bests. Lee Pearson has won a breathtaking 11 Paralympic Gold medals in a fantastic career, which also saw him win 30 European medals. Lee, who already has an MBE which he was rewarded with back in 2001 will also be knighted for is contribution to disabled sports. Katherine Grainger is the final name on the list, she won 5 Olympic medals in a decorated career. Katherine, who also has 6 World championship medals will be made a Dame to round off a truly inspiring career.
